Dr. Daniela Balutel on Cryptocurrency, Financial Literacy and Investor Behavior

We are excited to invite you to an upcoming talk by Dr. Daniela Balutel, a Mitacs post-doctoral fellow at York University, on Wednesday, April 2nd, 2025 between 5:00PM-7:00 PM at the Schulich School of Business, York University.

Drawing on data from the Bitcoin Omnibus Surveys, Dr. Balutel will present key insights from her research on the dynamics of cryptoasset ownership and usage in Canada. She will also explore the links between digital and financial literacy, cash usage, gender differences, and the role of beliefs in shaping decisions within the Bitcoin market.

Whether you're new to cryptocurrency or a "crypto expert", this talk will offer a valuable opportunity to understand the financial implications of digital currencies and the role they play in today's economy. This event will feature a brief introduction and Q & A moderated by Schulich Professor Henry M. Kim. This event is co-hosted by the Schulich School of Business, York University's blockchain.lab, and the Ontario Blockchain Cluster. This event is supported by York University VPRI's Catalyzing Interdisciplinary Research Clusters grant.

Daniela Balutel is a MITACS Postdoctoral Fellow at York University. She holds a PhD in Economics from a joint program between the University of Orleans (France) and Alexandru Ioan Cuza University (Romania). Her research focuses on cryptocurrency adoption, cash usage, investment behavior, gender differences, and crypto and financial literacy.

Her work has been published in the Canadian Journal of Economics, The International Journal of Central Banking, The Journal of Financial Literacy and Wellbeing, Economic Systems, and Applied Economics, among others.







Henry M. Kim is Associate Professor and Area Coordinator of the Operations Management and Information Systems area at the Schulich School of Business (York University). He is also the Director of York University's blockchain.lab.

Henry, along with Prof. Joann Jasiak of York's Department of Economics, is the Principal Investigator of the $525,000 York University research grant on Digital Currencies.

This grant brings together researchers from different parts of York University as well as collaborators like the Bank of Canada to catalyze interdisciplinary research in topics such as blockchain, cryptocurrencies and web3, real-world assets, central bank digital currencies, and digital payments.

Dr Kim has published over 30 refereed papers on these topics and is also an active member of the Ontario Blockchain Cluster.
